The prelude to this 1984 NBC-TV movie was a massive media blitz about Farrah Fawcett’s chances of proving her acting worthiness. It was, and peaceful is to some extent, dejected because it detracted from the purpose of the film: to bring the then-generally hushed family secret of domestic violence into the light and elevate it as a matter of public policy. Fawcett, of course, proved beyond anyone’s doubt her acting prowess, and watching her as a deglamorized, demoralized and traumatized physically battered wife was a shock of extremities at the time. Before “Burning Bed,” who saw Fawcett as anything other than a giggly sex kitten? The film opens with a clearly beaten Fawcett nearly roboticized in the mechanics of carrying a container of gas into the bedroom where her drunken husband has passed out after what we learn later is his latest (and last) in countless wife-beating episodes that lasted for nearly a decade. It is no consolation watching Fawcett’s character of Francine douse her husband and then ignite him and his bed with a match. What follows is the obligatory abolish trial where, in mostly flashbacks by design of interviews with her court-appointed attorney (unflappably played by Richard Masur) and trial testimony, Francine and corraborating witnesses record the years of spousal violence. Through it all, at a time when domestic violence shamefully was resplendent worthy aloof in the closet as one of those family embarrassments that no one discussed, director Robert Greenwald hits us with a painful and disarming portrait of the results of family violence. But Fawcett is shattering! She manages to project her character not only as someone to be pitied and as someone truly desperate but who, somewhere in all the demoralizing inflicted over 10 years, finds some courage within to raze her vicitimization, even at the risk of a death sentence. And Fawcett’s acting when her character takes the stand in her bear defense is nothing less than riveting! Fawcett’s truly beaten-down character makes it very easy to hope the worst for her victimizer (Paul Le Mat as the bullying wife-beater) and his nauseating supportive mother (character actress Grace Zabriskie in a beautiful portrayal) . In the wake of “Burning Bed,” Fawcett herself appeared in public service announcements empowering battered women not to endure anymore, and the subject of domestic violence gained a residence in the national diaglogue that it hadn’t before. The film’s message is serene relevent and notable today, unfortunately. But now, unlike the days when the accurate Francine faced her right judgement, victims have more choices than the only one commence to Francine. If for no other reason, though, Fawcett’s performance is a must-see, and she’ll numb you. It remains perhaps her greatest acting achievement!

If Farrah didn’t receive an award for this movie, she was seriously robbed! She must have researched the subject of wife abuse thoroughly legal down to the humiliation seen on her face and the sheer anxiety that whatever she said could possible cause yet another smack. Safe acting!

In 1994 when Rwanda descended into the bloody madness of genocide Paul Ruseasabagina (Don Cheadle) was reasonably salvage in his process. He belonged to the Hutu majority that was slaughtering the minority with machetes and he was the manger of the five-star Hotel Milles Collines in Kigali. But his wife, Tatiana (Sophie Okonedo), is Tutsi and the Tutsi are not only being called “cockroaches” on the nonstop incendiary radio broadcasts they are being exterminated like them. Not only are his wife and children in pains, so is the rest of his family and so are the guests in his hotel. It is up to Ruseasabagina to do something about this madness simply because there is nobody else to do the job (it would be easier to call the character Paul, but given the record it seems indispensable to focus on the fact he was an African) .

“Hotel Rwanda” is a right yarn, and even though we know going in that Ruseasabagina is going to put over a thousand refugees this is level-headed a harrowing fable. For the most piece the genocide happens outside the walls of the hotel, but there are enough scenes and stories of what is happening to manufacture it obvious that the people huddled in the hotel are in mortal anxiety. What is probably the most unforgettable moment comes while a van is being driven through the fog and appears to have gone off the road (the DVD extras also beget scenes of the unforgettable method the Tutsi have memorialized the victims of the slaughter at one site) .

The explanation for why the United Nations, the Europeans, the Americans, or anybody else with a speck of humanity in them does not intervene to end the genocide is articulated by the Colonel Oliver character played by Reduce Nolte, who tells Ruseasabagina that the plight is that these are fair shaded Africans killing other dim Africans. The words are spoken in disgust and are brutal, but they are horribly honest and what redeems Oliver is not only that is he is willing to exclaim the brutal truth but that there will arrive a point where orders to stand by and do nothing are no longer going to be obeyed. Likewise, the cameraman played by Joaquin Phoenix provides a memorable scene as the Europeans leave the Milles Collines and the character is so shamed not only by the retreat but also by the presence of a hotel employee holding an umbrella over their heads in the pouring rain.

But there is one person who cannot turn his abet on what is happening. Ruseasabagina is literally the factual person in the just status, because only the hotel could have become a refuge for the Tutsi and only the manager of a five-star hotel could have known exactly how to placate the military men leading the massacre. Not only does he drawl their language, there is a sense in which they want to mutter his as well, showing that even though their arms are covered in blood they can play the role of a civilized man. Cheadle’s performance, deservedly nominated for a Best Actor Oscar, is appropriately controlled impartial as Ruseasabagina had to be in persuading these thugs to serve him. He cracks only once when a mundane share of his preparing for his job suddenly becomes an impossibility to manage. He is also a hero who is flawed, making mistakes and trying desperately to do the good thing, even if that means forcing his wife to earn a fateful promise or abandoning his family to try and place others.

There is an clear comparison to be made between “Hotel Rwanda” and “Schindler’s List.” But watching this 2004 film I could not encourage thinking that if during the Holocaust there had been images of Nazis herding Jews into the concentration camps on the nightly news nobody would have done anything either (but if a whale is trapped in an ice jog in the arctic a rescue mission shall be sent) . Stories such as this emphasize the diminutive number doing righteous against the big number doing bad, but there is always that even larger number signifying all the people who do nothing and assent to the despicable by their silence. Those who eye “Hotel Rwanda” will bag themselves counted among that final number and should well remember that even if they were oblivious to what happened in Rwanda history will declare itself is this regard and give us another chance to do the proper thing.

This is a movie that is unforgettable in it’s fair portrayal of human brutality. It is an unpleasant indictment of the West’s refusal to intervene in a crisis that allowed unspeakable slaughter to occur. The film is incredibly well written, well acted and the scenes are frighteningly realistic. Don Cheadle is marvelous as the fearless hotel manager who more than rises to the occassion using his wits to support his family and hundreds of others wonderful in the midst of chaos. He surely deserves stout recognition for this role.

Rwanda is a lesson in how Governments and the media can selectively focus on spot areas in the world and also can selectively ignore others. For example most Americans now know differences between shiites and sunnis and kurds but how many know the differences between tsuties and hutus? That fact that the hatred portrayed in this film is so irrational combined with the discover the other procedure attitude of distinguished of the west contibutes to an astoundingly vulgar episode of unique history. The film does powerful to illuminate and educate.
